5 Reasons DIYers Won’t Want to Miss This First-of-Its-Kind Festival

DIY inspiration is everywhere online, but nothing compares to learning by doing. That’s the inspiration behind DIY CON, a first-of-its-kind festival taking place this November in Dallas where do-it-yourself enthusiasts of every experience level can build new skills through hands-on workshops, interactive demonstrations, expert-led sessions and an expansive marketplace—all under one roof. Here’s what you can expect.

1. Learn From Professional Creators

A slew of popular makers and DIYers who’ve built dedicated followings by sharing their know-how online will be in attendance offering their expertise. The hosts of Property Brothers, Drew and Jonathan Scott, are headlining the event, and husband-and-wife team Mr. Kate will bring their humor and approachable design sense to the main stage on Friday. Throughout the weekend, a stacked schedule of panels and presentations promise to deliver an endless stream of tips and tricks.

A few we have our eye on:

  • Friday’s keynote will feature Ashley Tate talking all things color.
  • Craftsman Jimmy DiResta will take the stage on Saturday to share how taking risks helped grow his career.
  • Fariha Nasir of Pennies for a Fortune will explore themes from her book, Home, Improved, to empower attendees with tangible how-tos and accessible resources.

2. Build Skills in Hands-on Workshops

This is where DIY CON sets itself apart from other conventions: Instead of just watching and listening, you’ll have the chance to actually do. All ticket holders are able to register (on a first-come, first-served basis) for hands-on workshops. Programming is still being finalized, but here a few standouts that are sure to fill up fast:

  • Deck Wars: Build It. Beat It. Win It.: Brent Gentling of BYOTools will demonstrate the fundamentals of deck building, and then participants will compete to install deck boards using a brand-new tool—that the winner gets to take home.
  • Cut With Confidence: Miter Saw Essentials: Anika Gandhi will host a miter saw 101 session, coaching how to properly measure and cut angles.
  • Make & Take: Build Your Own Live Edge Charcuterie Board: Participants will rotate through four stations (cutting, drilling, sanding, and finishing) to create their own charcuterie board. Meat and cheese, sadly, are not included.

3. Discover, Test, and Save on New Products

The full roster of exhibitors has yet to be released, but if the sneak peek list is any indication, you’ll be able to find just about anything you need for your next project. Berne workwear, Matchless powder-coated steel cabinetry, Sashco caulk and stain, Leviton electrical supply, and multi-tool maker Hammer Fist are just a few exhibitors to expect.

But these won’t be the typical “walk-by” booths you find at traditional trade shows. Here, you’ll also be able to test-drive tools and products before you buy. There will be designated testing stations, and vendors like SKIL power tools and Rockler Woodworking & Hardware will offer demos and hands-on displays that you won’t find at a big-box store…
