Health officials investigate foods potentially linked to cyclosporiasis in North Carolina

BUNCOMBE COUNTY, N.C. (WLOS) — North Carolina health officials continue to investigate amid a surge in cases of cyclosporiasis, an intestinal illness that can cause “explosive” diarrhea.

At least 307 cases of cyclosporiasis and 13 hospitalizations have been reported in North Carolina since May, according to the state’s Department of Health and Human Services. The total number of cases now exceeds the number of cases reported in 2024 and 2025, the NCDHHS confirmed.

Of the state’s more than 300 cases, most were reported in Wake County. At least four cases of cyclosporiasis have been reported in Buncombe County, local health officials confirmed. Henderson County has reported seven cases this month…
