The Jersey City Board of Education (BOE) voted 6-2 to extend the contract of Superintendent Dr. Norma Fernandez for an additional five years to a room split between supporters and detractors at last night’s special meeting.
After appointing Melany Cruz Burgos as the newest trustee, as HCV first reported, to replace former Trustee Dr. Matthew Schneider – who resigned on June 30th – the board heard public comment on Fernandez.
Speakers were divided between supporting Fernandez and calling for a delay of the vote, which would renew her contract until 2031, with some suggesting after the criminal investigation into the findings of the special education audit has concluded.
