HARVEY COUNTY, Kan. — The Harvey County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about scam callers who are falsely claiming to be a sheriff’s deputy in an effort to intimidate people into paying supposed fines or resolving nonexistent legal issues.
In a social media post, the sheriff’s office said scammers have recently been impersonating Sgt. Jeff Van Horn, telling victims they missed a court date or attempting to pressure them into taking immediate action.
The department used humor to make its point, joking that Sgt. Van Horn is known for his beard, strength and crime-fighting abilities, but emphasizing that he does not call people to coordinate court appearances or collect payments.
