City of Coweta sends out notice about drinking water concerns

They have told residents that during several monitoring periods they did not monitor or test for several contaminants and say they are not sure of the quality of drinking water during those time periods. The samples and monitoring periods are as follows:

  • Radionuclides – from January 1, 2020 to December 31, 2025
  • Sodium – from January 1, 2025 to December 31, 2025
  • Volatile Organic Compounds – from January 1, 2023 to December 31, 2025
  • Lead and Copper – from January 1, 2023 to December 31, 2025

Coweta says customers are not at risk and there isn’t a reason to suspect any harmful effects. They don’t suggest needing to switch to alternative water supplies. They say the Coweta Public Works Authority had several changes in management in the department during this period. The current staff was not aware that the water consultant did not take samples for the contaminants, and that lead and copper samples were not submitted by the previous Public Works Director.

Samples have been taken and reported to the Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality and that future samples will be taken per the required schedule…
