A nine-time convicted felon who savagely beat and stomped a 61-year-old woman to death during a robbery attempt aboard a Red Line train in the Loop has been sentenced to 25 years in prison after a judge found him guilty but mentally ill of the January 4, 2024, murder.
Mijawon Johnson, 39, was paroled in August 2023 after serving half of a six-year sentence he received for robbing a covert narcotics officer on the West Side on St. Patrick’s Day 2021. Less than five months later, he spotted another victim, Vivian Leah Morgan, as the train they were riding neared State-Lake around 1:33 a.m.
Prosecutors said surveillance video showed Johnson trying to steal Morgan’s bag and then launching a violent attack, pinning her head against a seat and repeatedly punching her in the head and stomach. Officials said he “stomped” on her body and abandoned her on the train. CTA employees found Morgan unresponsive when the train arrived at the Roosevelt station.
