We at THE BEE have always called it the Holgate Viaduct: That overpass on Holgate Boulevard that carries pedestrians and traffic over the Brooklyn Rail Yard. But, apparently, nobody at any relevant level of government in the state had ever given this bridge any real, formal name.
When a resident in the Brooklyn neighborhood, in which it is located, found that out, he began a campaign to give it one – and to have the new name posted at both ends of the viaduct.
On February 12, 2026, the Portland City Council unanimously adopted his proposed name: “Brooklyn Bridge”. The city eventually dedicated the structure’s new name during a neighborhood celebration at the end of May in the parking lot of “Security Signs”, beside the bridge…
