BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – Family and friends gathered in Bessemer to honor the life of KJ Starkes, days before the one-year anniversary of his death.
KJ Starkes was 3-years-old when he died July 22 of last year. According to the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office, he was left in a hot car for more than five hours while in the care of a Covenant Services worker contracted by the Alabama Department of Human Resources.
KJ’s aunt, Shyteria White, said the family believes DHR failed to protect him.
“We as a family feel as if DHR have failed KJ,” White said. “They had people in place that’s supposed to have been protecting and they failed him as a whole.”
