While Tropical Depression Two poses no direct threat to Southwest Florida, there will be an increased threat of rip currents as the system remains nearly stationary in the northern Gulf. The greatest threat for rip currents will be Monday through Tuesday evening in Lee and Charlotte counties.
What is a rip current?
Rip currents are powerful channels of water that can sweep even the best swimmers away from the shore. While rip currents are more common off the Florida Panhandle coast, tropical systems often increase the threat of rip currents.
If you’re ever caught in a rip current, yell for help and remain calm. Swim parallel to the shore and back toward the beach once you’re out of the rip current. It’s important to never attempt to swim directly against the current, as even the strongest swimmers will tire quickly…
