Fans of the Big Bang Theory universe have a fresh treat coming their way-but it won’t be quite what they expect. Creator Chuck Lorre revealed that the upcoming spinoff, Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, is breaking away from the classic sitcom mold by offering shorter episodes, a deliberate creative choice.
Rather than the usual 30-minute format, some episodes clock in at just 15 minutes. “We felt the story was already told,” Lorre shared in an interview with Deadline. “Adding more would just be padding-filling time between key moments without real purpose.”
The first season will include 10 episodes: one at 15 minutes, four at 18 minutes, and the remaining five ranging from 20 to 25 minutes. Lorre isn’t worried about sticking to traditional lengths, noting that the standard sitcom runtime originated from network TV’s advertising needs-a constraint that doesn’t apply to streaming platforms. His hope is simply to deliver the best show possible and engage viewers without them checking the clock.
“It’s about making a show that people either love or don’t,” he said, “not one where they’re waiting for it to end.”
The spinoff, which was greenlit by HBO a year ago, reunites original cast members including Kevin Sussman as Stuart Bloom, Lauren Lapkus as Denise, Brian Posehn as Bert, and Ross Bowie as Barry Kripke. There’s also potential for surprise appearances from other fan favorites. When asked about returning, Kaley Cuoco expressed her willingness, saying, “If Chuck calls me, I’ll be there.”
Stuart Fails to Save the Universe will premiere on HBO on July 23-more than seven years after The Big Bang Theory concluded its run on CBS. Fans can look forward to a fresh take on the beloved universe with a format that’s as innovative as it is entertaining.
