Police warn of scammers impersonating school sports teams

LARGO, Fla. (WWSB) – Largo Police Department is warning the public about a scam involving people posing as high school students raising money for their sports teams.

In a social media post, the department said scammers approach people in busy shopping plazas with convincing stories about buying candy for a fundraiser, then ask victims to scan a QR code to donate.

Police said while many youth organizations do legitimately fundraise in the community, scammers are exploiting people’s willingness to support local students…
