ALABAMA (WHNT) — It’s summer in Alabama, and according to the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, that means it may be more likely for you to see a black bear.
According to ADCNR, black bears live in Alabama in two main areas, one in South Alabama, making up parts of Mobile, Washington and Clarke Counties, and the other in Northeast Alabama, primarily in DeKalb, Cherokee and Etowah Counties.

State officials say that during the spring and summer, these bear populations tend to range further out from their homes, sometimes dramatically so, as adult males look for a mate and younger bears leave their mother’s territory. Due to that, bears have been encountered by people all over the state, with one map from ADCNR showing sightings all across Alabama from 2010 to 2024.
