Two Kansas City men are now facing first-degree murder charges in a 2025 shooting near East 56th Street and Troost Avenue that left one man dead and two others wounded, prosecutors announced Monday. The Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office said on July 20, 2026, that both defendants are charged in connection with the May 24, 2025 gunfire, and a judge has ordered each held on a $500,000 cash-only bond. Investigators say surveillance video and digital trails did much of the talking in this case.
Charges and evidence
According to a press release from the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office, Jeremy Rodgers and Alvin Johnson each face first-degree murder, three counts of armed criminal action and two counts of unlawful use of a weapon. Prosecutors say surveillance footage shows Rodgers walking toward the victims and firing several rounds, then leaving the scene.
Detectives used a mix of cellphone data, additional surveillance video and license-plate readers to tie both men to the shooting, according to the release. The same document notes that three people showed up at a nearby hospital with gunshot wounds after the incident, and one of them was pronounced dead while receiving medical care.
How authorities identified the suspects
Local reporting from KMBC adds more detail on how investigators zeroed in on the two men. Both Rodgers and Johnson allegedly tried to enter a nearby hospital following the shooting and gave officers their names, according to KMBC, giving detectives an early break in the case.
KMBC reports that officers pulled hospital surveillance footage that appeared to show a suspect firing at the victims, then running through a parking lot and getting into a vehicle. Those details, layered onto the prosecutor’s account of digital and video evidence, helped investigators build their timeline and theory of what happened on Troost that night.

The shooting is one of several high-profile incidents in the area that have rattled residents and business owners and put a harsh spotlight on public safety in nearby retail and nightlife spots…
