NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) – Ochsner Health is preparing to bring an experimental at-home Alzheimer’s treatment to Louisiana that could also help treat other neurological diseases.
The therapy — Spectris — is still in clinical trials and takes a different approach from infusions or pills. The system uses a headset that delivers strobing light and low-frequency sound at 40 hertz to stimulate the brain. Researchers believe the stimulation may help remove plaque linked to Alzheimer’s disease, improve cognition and potentially slow the disease’s progression.
“We think of that sort of the way that you would exercise for your body to help strengthen your heart muscle,” Dr. Houghton said. “Exercising the brain at 40 hertz really strengthens the brain and hopefully puts yourself in a better position to help slow down the progression of diseases like Alzheimer’s.”…
