PORSTMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) – Portsmouth-based disaster relief nonprofit Mercy Chefs is on the ground in Texas to provide relief after devastating floods.
Mercy Chefs has deployed its mobile kitchens to feed first responders and search-and-rescue task forces. The response effort includes two members of Mery Chefs’ local Texas team who woke up floodwaters in their own homes. In a show of dedication, they still showed up for their neighbors.
The team was able to serve meals the moment water started rising, thanks to an established permanent presence in Kerr County following the Guadalupe River floods of 2025.
“We’ve been serving in Texas for over a year now, and because we’re already here, we were able to begin serving meals immediately,” Mercy Chefs founder and CEO Gary LeBlanc said. “Two of our own team members woke up to floodwater in their homes this morning in Kerr County, yet they’re still helping us care for their neighbors. That’s the heart of Mercy Chefs. We know Texans are resilient, and we’re here to feed body and soul as long as we’re needed.”
