Authorities urge caution following drowning on Isle of Palms

ISLE OF PALMS, S.C. (WCBD) – Authorities are urging beachgoers to exercise extreme caution along the South Carolina coast as the risk of rip currents remains moderate.

The warning comes after a 41-year-old man from Ohio died Tuesday while attempting to save a child from the surf at Isle of Palms Beach.

Emergency responders were called just before 2 p.m. after the man entered the water to rescue a struggling child. According to Sgt. Matt Storen of the Isle of Palms Police Department, witnesses reported that both the child and another family member were having difficulty in the water. The man managed to get the child out of the currents but did not make it back to shore himself…
