NCDOT updates Salisbury on Asheville corridor, potential train schedule changes

SALISBURY — The train keeps chugging along, but not to Asheville just yet.

Representatives from the North Carolina Department of Transportation spoke to the Salisbury City Council about the progress of the Western Corridor project that would connect Salisbury to Asheville by rail, despite the project not getting funding in the NC state budget for the 2026-2027 fiscal year.

Rail travel has been a focus for Salisbury with the city’s recent purchase of the train depot and recent calls to restore skipped stops at Salisbury on routes to Raleigh and Charlotte and support the Western Corridor. Governor Josh Stein included $28 million for the Western Corridor project for the first time, but the funding was not included in the General Assembly budget…
