Lucas County is looking to save taxpayer dollars by reducing the number of beds it contracts for at a regional jail next year — but one Toledo Municipal Court judge warns it could eventually hamper sentencing decisions and public safety.
At a Corrections Center of Northwest Ohio board meeting on Wednesday, Commissioner Pete Gerken submitted a bid of 150 beds for Lucas County at the facility near Stryker, Ohio, that houses inmates from five member counties in the region.
Mr. Gerken said the reduction reflects actual usage. In 2025, Lucas County averaged 141 inmates at CCNO despite paying for 170 beds. Continuing to pay for unused capacity, he said, would be fiscally irresponsible…
