Agents from the Ohio Investigative Unit and the Cleveland Division of Police fanned out across the city’s 5th District late Wednesday, in what officials described as an intelligence-driven push to hit the areas where shootings and weapons calls have been piling up. By the end of the night, officers had arrested eight people on felony charges and pulled 12 illegally possessed firearms out of the neighborhood, according to police.
Two of those guns were outfitted with machine-gun conversion devices that can turn a semiautomatic handgun into an automatic-fire weapon, a setup that dramatically increases the volume of fire and the risk to anyone nearby. Investigators framed the operation as a targeted attempt to disrupt violent offenders and choke off weapons trafficking in hot-spot blocks inside the 5th District.
