HENDERSON, Ky. (WEHT) – Officials with the Vanderburgh County Jail were found not liable for the 2022 death of inmate Jacob Ziliak.
According to court documents, Ziliak was arrested on a bench warrant for failure to appear in a criminal matter on August 6, 2022. While being transported to the jail, Ziliak reportedly complained about a fever that he had been experiencing over the past few days. Ziliak’s estate claims that his medical complaints were ignored for ten days while he was in the jail, until his condition deteriorated.

During his time in the jail, representatives of Ziliak’s estate said he was malnourished, delirious and was unable to clean himself. Attorneys say Ziliak relied on a cellmate, who had been diagnosed with COVID-19 to take care of him at this time.
At one point during his incarceration, Ziliak lost the ability to stand on his own, and his cellmate reportedly told a guard, “He’s dying.” Ziliak’s cellmate also reported that he would be writing a letter to the jail commander after he had to take care of Ziliak for a week…
