[Update] Salmon Fire sparks off Highway 101 near Salmon Creek in Southern Humboldt

Around 11:15 a.m. late this morning, the emergency communications center received multiple 911 calls about a vegetation fire off Highway 101 near the Salmon Creek area of Southern Humboldt.

According to scanner traffic, a vegetation fire is burning in brush near the southbound side of 101 near the Salmon Creek exit on the west side of the South Fork of the Eel River. The Grasshopper Lookout 1 camera on the ALERTCalifornia system shows the plume growing in size.

Multiple fire departments including Miranda VFD, Myers Flat VFD, and Phillipsville VFD have been requested. CAL FIRE air support is enroute.

The incident commander estimates the fire, now dubbed the Salmon Fire, to be approximately 1/2 acre in heavy fuels timber, growing at a slow rate of spread…
