A pattern of tragedy continues at Massachusetts quarries, where abandoned pits claim lives and leave lasting injuries through drowning, falls, and other accidents.
On Saturday, July 25, 2026, emergency crews responded shortly after 2 p.m. to a report of a missing swimmer at Shadowbrook Quarries (also known as Clare Quarry) in Milford, behind Shadowbrook Lane and the nearby condominiums off Purchase Street.
The site is an abandoned granite quarry long popular—and illegal—for swimming and cliff jumping. Search efforts involving dozens of first responders, including dive teams from multiple communities, continued into Sunday.
