Toronto Police Investigate Overnight Damage at Jewish-Owned Bakery Locations
Toronto authorities are currently investigating damage to two locations of Kiva’s Bagel, a Jewish-owned bakery chain, after incidents occurred overnight. The Toronto Police Service’s Hate Crime Unit is handling the case.
Both bakery sites sustained broken windows, with police confirming that one window was likely struck by gunfire. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported.
The damage was discovered early Sunday morning. At 8:12 a.m., police received a call regarding a broken window caused by apparent gunfire at the Kiva’s outlet located at Young Street and St.
Clair Avenue West. Shortly after, a second report came in about a broken window at the Bathurst Street and Steeles Avenue West location.
Duty Inspector Scott Bradbury addressed the media, noting the incidents occurred between the stores’ Saturday closing and Sunday opening hours. He emphasized the ongoing investigation to determine if the events are linked and to identify those responsible. Multiple units, including the Hate Crime Unit and Guns and Gangs Task Force, are actively canvassing the area, resulting in an increased police presence.
Mayor Olivia Chow condemned the attacks, labeling them “vile and unacceptable” and reaffirmed her commitment to standing against anti-Semitism alongside Toronto’s Jewish community.
Kiva’s Bagel, established in 1979, operates three locations throughout the city.
These incidents come amid a recent rise in hate crimes in Toronto. While reported hate crimes dropped significantly last year-from 443 in 2024 to 231 in 2025-anti-Jewish hate crimes remain the most common, representing 35% of all hate incidents and 82% of religiously motivated cases. Police have noted a troubling 40% increase in hate crime reports in the early months of 2026 compared to the previous year.
Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar also commented on the situation, expressing concern over the attacks and urging the Canadian government to take stronger action against rising anti-Semitic violence.
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to ensure the safety and security of the community.
