Historic Ann Arbor railroad bridge near Mesick getting DNR rehab for trail safety

The project will reroute snowmobile traffic off plowed county roads and onto the Betsie Valley Trail, with completion targeted for this winter

“What we are doing there is repurposing it for future snowmobile use and non-motorized use and development of the Betsie Valley Trail,” Slavin said.

The project dates back to 2017, when the DNR hired a consultant to inspect the bridge and determine whether it could be repaired for future use. Slavin said the inspection found the bridge could be rehabilitated. Planned work includes placing new boards in front of the bridge’s piers, repairing and improving the metal superstructure, fixing a large split in the eastern abutment, and capping the bridge with a concrete deck and railing.
