KALAMAZOO, Mich. — A man will be spending decades behind prison bars for his role in a fatal 2022 shooting in Kalamazoo.
Vernon Powell was sentenced Monday to 38-60 years for second-degree murder in the shooting death of Aaron Lee Starling, 28, according to Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety (KDPS).

He will also serve time for the following charges:
- Felony Firearm- 2 years
- Felon in Possession of a Weapon- 2-5 years
- Felony Firearm- 2 years
- Carrying a Concealed Weapon- 2-5 years
Powell, 47, was arrested after Starling was shot on Portage Street on Sept. 3, 2022.
Starling was taken to the hospital, but later died, according to KDPS.
