ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — On July 28, 2011, Asheville Fire Department Captain Jeff Bowen lost his life while responding to an arson fire. AFD firefighters, city officials, Bowen’s family members and members of the public gathered for the 15th annual remembrance ceremony of the fire captain.

Bowen was killed in the line of duty while fighting an arson fire on July 28, 2011, at 445 Biltmore Ave. near downtown Asheville.
“Units from the Asheville Fire Department responded to an automatic fire alarm activation at 445 Biltmore Avenue. Engine 2 arrived to find an active fire on the fifth floor of the medical office building and immediately commenced firefighting operations,” detailed John Harbin, AFD communication specialist. “The event marked one of the darkest days in the department’s history, resulting in injuries to more than a dozen firefighters and the tragic loss of Rescue 3 Captain Jeffrey Scott Bowen.”…
