SARASOTA COUNTY, FL — Two men from Hawaii have been arrested and charged after sheriff’s deputies say a break-in attempt at a Sarasota County home escalated into a shooting late on April 24, 2026. Investigators say the homeowner was hurt when multiple rounds were fired through a sliding glass door.
The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded just before midnight after the homeowner reported gunfire. The case is still under investigation.
How deputies responded
Authorities said a helicopter unit followed one suspect as he ran from the home and climbed over a wall in a gated community. Deputies say that suspect then got into a Chevrolet Equinox driven by a second person.
The vehicle was stopped and both people inside were taken into custody. Investigators later recovered a 9mm handgun along the road near where the stop happened.
