‘I feel like I’m getting my life back.’ Goodwill Middle Tennessee’s ‘Wheels to Work’ program gifts Nashville woman a car

What This Story Is About

  • Goodwill Middle Tennessee gave a used car to Hermitage employee Brittony Green through its “Wheels to Work” program, making her the 22nd recipient in the program’s 13-year history.

Why It Matters

  • Green, who survived brain surgery and spent months unable to find work, had been spending up to $30 a day on ride shares just to get to her job — a cost the donated vehicle eliminates.
  • Green plans to use the car to visit family in Chicago, a trip she said she has been unable to make due to the lack of transportation.

For Context

  • The Wheels to Work program accepts donated vehicles in good mechanical condition and awards them to Goodwill employees who have gone without a reliable car for at least one year.

Catch Up

  • Three years ago, Green was working two management jobs when doctors discovered a brain tumor the size of a golf ball behind her eye socket; surgery, complications, and six months of recovery cost her both positions, her apartment, and eventually led her to Goodwill — the only employer that called her back.

From two jobs to no income

Three years ago, Green was working as a general manager at Dunkin’ Donuts and an overnight manager at Walmart when she developed a facial pain that led her to a doctor.

“I started out with this weird facial pain. And I went to the doctor,” Green said. “They sent me to get an MRI because I was thinking, okay, something dealing with my tooth or something.”…
