New York schools reveal major 2026-27 calendar shakeup: earlier start times upstate, fewer class days, and a late September 10 start for NYC

New York’s school calendars are shifting in two very different ways this fall, and depending on where you live, you’re either losing an hour of sleep or gaining a new date to circle on the fridge.

Some districts across New York State are pushing daily start times almost a full hour earlier for 2026-27, according to a report from WYRK, while New York City just released its own full calendar with a handful of quirks families need to plan around now, not in August.

The upstate start-time shakeup

In parts of central New York, elementary school start times are moving from 8:50am to 7:50am, a change driven almost entirely by a statewide shortage of school bus drivers
