After spending more than three decades working in some of New York City’s most prominent restaurants, Timothy Rucker never expected that the next chapter of his hospitality career would bring him back to Tulsa. Officially opening The Helen earlier this year in May, Rucker’s breakfast and lunch restaurant combines the standards of big city dining with the comfort of a neighborhood diner.
“We believe in familiar dishes done better (and) served with intention, curiosity and genuine hospitality,” Rucker says.
A Tulsa native, Rucker left Oklahoma in 1992 to pursue acting in New York before finding his way into the restaurant industry. What began as a room service position evolved into leadership roles with acclaimed chefs including Mario Batali, Bobby Flay, Michael White and Geoffrey Zakarian. In 2023 he left New York to oversee restaurant operations in Stockton, New Jersey, and Austin, Texas, before returning home in January to pursue the prospect of opening The Helen.
“My whole life has been, if the door opens, I go through it,” Rucker says. “My whole career, I became who I became because I took chances … I saw an opportunity, and I went for it.”…
