Pima County Sheriff Provides Update on Investigation into Abduction of Savannah Guthrie’s Mother
TUCSON, Ariz. – Authorities have completed testing on hair found at the home of Nancy Guthrie, mother of “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie, but no suspect has emerged from those results, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos told ABC News on Thursday.
“The hair was analyzed, and there was nothing conclusive,” Sheriff Nanos said in an interview.
This leaves investigators relying primarily on a mixed DNA sample recovered from the residence, which has yet to be definitively linked to any individual. According to the sheriff, the DNA sample contains genetic material from up to four different people, making analysis complex.
“It’s uncertain whether current technology can fully separate the contributors,” Nanos explained. “However, multiple forensic laboratories nationwide-including the FBI lab in Quantico, as well as facilities in Kansas, Florida, California, and Arizona-are actively working on this challenging evidence.”
Sheriff Nanos emphasized the collaborative effort underway, noting, “At least five or six labs across the country are involved. We have some of the brightest minds in the nation, if not the world, focused on solving this.”
Nancy Guthrie was reportedly abducted from her Tucson-area home during the early morning hours of February 1. A masked individual was captured on the home’s doorbell camera, but six months later, investigators have not determined whether the suspect acted alone.
“We aren’t ready to say it was just one person or multiple,” Nanos said. “Did the suspect have assistance? Possibly.”
Despite the ongoing challenges, the sheriff remains optimistic that the case will be solved. He also commended Savannah Guthrie for her efforts to keep public attention on her mother’s disappearance, including recent posts on social media.
“Someone out there knows something. We urge them to come forward and help us find Nancy,” Nanos stated. “We need their information to bring this case to a resolution.”
