Prichard mayor won’t yet back dismantling police department

MOBILE, Ala. (NBC 15) — Prichard Mayor Carletta Davis is not yet ready to support a special grand jury recommendation to abolish and rebuild the Prichard Police Department, saying she wants more information before making a recommendation to the city council. The council cannot consider dissolving the department without a recommendation from the mayor.

Speaking publicly for the first time since the grand jury released its report last week, Davis held a virtual news conference Thursday while traveling out of town. She said rebuilding the department remains her goal but stressed she first needs to understand the ramifications of any recommendation.

“We have suffered greatly here in Prichard from knee-jerk reactions and poor planning, to be quite frank, and I want to stop that cycle. And so, because of that, I am not going to make any recommendation to the council this week. I am doing my due diligence,” said Davis…
