The PJM grid’s largest battery is now under construction in Ohio

A giant 1 GWh battery is now under construction outside Columbus, Ohio, where data center and industrial development is rapidly pushing up electricity demand.

Eolian’s Flint Grid battery energy storage system will be able to deliver 200 megawatts of power for more than five hours in Jersey Township, Licking County. That’s enough capacity to store more than 1 gigawatt-hour of electricity and release it when demand – and strain on the grid – is highest.

The project is being built next to New Albany’s fast-growing data center and industrial corridor. Amazon Web Services already operates data center infrastructure there, while Google and Meta are constructing additional data center buildings nearby…
