APD releases new details on deadly police shooting that also struck bystander downtown

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – The Albuquerque Police Department has released new details on the deadly police shooting in downtown Albuquerque that left one dead and three wounded, including a bystander who was likely hit by an officer’s stray bullet.

It was a chaotic scene the night of July 3 when officers shot at Stephen Griego 16 times, killing him. The barrage of bullets came after Griego shot two men in a busy nightlife hub.

Sgt. Ralph Rodriguez, who’s been with the department since 2024, was heard in body-camera footage yelling for officers to, “Stop. Stop. Stop. Stop shooting!” toward Griego, who was on the ground at that point…
