NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) — A 20-year-old correctional officer is recovering from life-threatening injuries sustained in a motorcycle crash, and the riding community is stepping up to help.
Strange Ones Motorsports is hosting “Ride for Gabby,” a charity ride Sunday, Aug. 2. The event will be from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. The ride starts at 2 p.m. at Cycle Gear in North Charleston. Then fundraising events and a silent auction will take place at LG’s by the creek starting at 5 p.m. All vehicles are welcome — motorcycles, cars, trucks and more.
The crash
Gabby was riding to a work meeting when her motorcycle collided with a tree. She was thrown more than 100 feet and struck three additional trees. She was airlifted to a hospital and taken immediately into surgery.
Her injuries include a severely mangled right leg — which doctors initially believed would require amputation — a broken left leg, a broken left arm and shoulder, multiple fractures to her face and skull, and fractures to her lower spine. She required six units of blood while in the ICU and spent one month in intensive care before being released, according to a Facebook post.
Recovery and financial hardship
