More than 200 vehicles filled at least three parking lots Saturday at the Uptown Gig Harbor shopping center for 28th annual Cruise the Narrows Car Show.
Hosted by the Gig Harbor Cruisers Automotive Club, the one-day event welcomed owners of vintage and specialty vehicles of every make, model and era. Highlights for some included an early model Corvette with red low-back bucket seats, a red-and-white Ford Skyliner with a retractable hardtop, and — for this writer — a shimmering two-toned 1970 International Scout with a sleek black stripe.
Vehicle owners paid a $20 day-of registration fee to help support the club’s scholarship program for graduating seniors heading into the automotive industry from Peninsula, Gig Harbor and Henderson Bay high schools. Classic cars, custom builds, hot rods and even a vintage Tacoma logging truck drew crowds of spectators throughout the day. Within the first hour, the group reported more than 200 vehicles had signed up for the showcase.
Kids and cars
This year’s show also introduced a new Kids Corner designed to help inspire the next generation of car enthusiasts to the hobby. Families stopped by to see a replica Batmobile, climb into a race car for photos and scout dozens of toy Hot Wheels cars in a scavenger hunt. Many of the miniature vehicles were parked beside — or inside — their full-size counterparts throughout the show.
The club posted to Facebook saying they hope the Kids Corner “inspires curiosity, creates lasting memories and helps spark the next generation of car enthusiasts.”
