Man drives truck into creek off I-77; in critical condition, Canton fire department says

CANTON, Ohio (WJW) — Interstate 77 North in Canton was shutdown Monday evening following a crash.

Canton Fire Department Chief Steve Henderson confirmed to FOX 8 news that a man was driving a pickup truck around 6:30 p.m. when he veered off, went through a median and crashed into an embankment and into the West Branch of Nimishillen Creek.

Canton fire crews pulled the unconscious man from the submerged truck, and he was transported to Aultman Hospital in serious condition.

Ohio Department of Transportation cameras showed emergency responders working at I-77 at SR-800 and Cleveland Avenue. By 9 p.m., the road had reopened, but officials were still on the scene.

The Stark County Hazardous Materials Response Team was reportedly called to the scene to “contain fluids leaking from the vehicle,” the fire department said.

Another crash took place not far from this one on I-77 South at US-62 West, shutting down lanes in that area as well…
