The end of a barbecue era is almost upon us. After nearly a decade serving smoked meat outside of Austin, a smokehouse created by a late great pitmaster will be closing its doors for good at the end of the month.
Brotherton’s Black Iron Barbecue in Pflugerville first revealed it was in danger of closing at the start of the year as business was slow in the offseason months. The brand got a major boost in the ensuing weeks as customers lined out the door and Brotherton’s regularly sold out barbecue to keep things going, but it seems the solution was only a temporary one. With beef prices rising and its strip mall location limiting service, Brotherton’s announced that it will be closing at the end of August, with August 30 likely being its last day in business after nine years.
“We’ve been fighting to keep our head above water for a very long time and every solution we’ve really attempted has been a band-aid solution ultimately,” Braeden Brotherton said in a Facebook video. “There’s only so many avenues that we can go towards realistically to keep things going and everything we’ve tried just hasn’t really stuck.”…
