Shocked to see a Confederate flag flying in The Villages

I was driving through the entrance to Liberty Park off Buena Vista, glanced to my right, and was startled to see that someone was flying a Confederate flag. First, flying the Confederate flag may be illegal under Florida Statute 720.304. Second, and more importantly, although this flag was once the flag of the Army of Northern Virginia, since then, it has long been adopted as the flag of racists, antisemites and anti-Catholic bigots.

And for those who say flying the Stars and Bars is merely honoring “Southern heritage,” I remind them that the “Southern heritage” was slavery. In high school, I was taught that the Civil War was about “states’ rights.” Well, the “states’ rights” that the Confederacy fought for were to preserve slavery…
