MINDEN, La. — Recent wildfires across Europe and several western states are serving as a reminder that fire conditions can develop almost anywhere, including northwest Louisiana.
After weeks of heavy rainfall earlier this summer, lush grass growth has created a new challenge for the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development. As those grasses dry out in the summer heat, they become potential fuel for brush fires while also creating visibility concerns for drivers.
Residents have voiced frustration on social media and in emails about tall grass along Shreveport-area roadways, particularly near merge points where it can block drivers’ views of oncoming traffic.
“You know, people are frustrated with the aesthetic look of it and concerned about safety as well. And that’s totally understandable,” said Erin Buchanan, public information officer for DOTD’s northwest districts…
