Roman God of Fire Opens in Tempe Aug. 7

A dramatic new chapter in Tempe’s dining scene begins Aug. 7 as Roman God of Fire opens with wood-fired Italian cuisine, cathedral-inspired design, and immersive hospitality. The Italian dining destination is the newest from Phoenix-based Pretty Decent Concepts, the hospitality group behind Wren & Wolf, Trophy Room, Carry On, and Filthy Animal. Known simply as Roman, the 8,000-sq.-ft. restaurant, which was developed in collaboration with James Beard Award winner and Food Network personality Scott Conant and SC Culinary, has been three years in the making and is centered on the flavors and architecture of Rome.

The Pretty Decent Concepts Porftolio

Roman God of Fire is the latest addition to Pretty Decent Concepts’ expanding hospitality portfolio. The Phoenix-based company is known for some of the Valley’s most innovative and celebrated concepts including Wren & Wolf, Trophy Room, Carry On, Uppercut, and Cleaverman. Founded by Teddy Myers, Thor Nguyen, and Kaitlin Myers, the group has built its reputation around chef-driven menus, immersive design, and award-winning beverage programs.

Design of Roman God of Fire

The restaurant draws inspiration from old-world cathedrals, sacred relics, and Italian stonework. The restaurant’s interiors were designed by Peter Bowden of PETERMAX Design, whose portfolio includes the retro airliner-inspired Carry On.

At Roman, Bowden transports guests to a different time and space completely with statues, soaring arches, and cathedral-inspired details that guide guests through a series of thoughtfully designed spaces intended to evoke the grandeur of historic Rome. Even the bathrooms are jaw-droppingly beautiful, with gorgeous pinks and terracotta tones and an entrance draped in dramatic curtains.

Roman God of Fire’s Culinary Program

Roman God of Fire’s culinary program is led by Executive Chef Jared Porter, who works alongside Conant and Pretty Decent Concepts Culinary Director Ivan Gonzalez. The menu focuses on Roman cuisine through wood-fired cooking techniques and handmade pastas that celebrate traditional Italian flavors.

“Italian food has always been about soul, generosity, and connection,” says Chef Conant, in a press release. “I’m excited to collaborate with Pretty Decent Concepts in creating a space that captures that spirit while also offering something fresh and inspiring. We’re building a dining experience that surprises, and delights, while paying tribute to the traditions that inspire it.”…
