Free Lighthouse Climbs in Erie for National Lighthouse Day

Erie County residents will have the opportunity to celebrate National Lighthouse Day with free admission and tower climbs at two of the region’s most iconic landmarks thanks to sponsorship from Highmark BlueCross BlueShield.

The annual observance, held on August 7, commemorates the signing of the Act for the Establishment and Support of Lighthouses, Beacons, Buoys, and Public Piers in 1789, legislation that placed the nation’s lighthouses under federal administration. Congress later officially designated August 7 as National Lighthouse Day in 1989, recognizing the vital role lighthouses have played in maritime navigation and American history.

As part of this year’s celebration, Erie County residents can climb the towers of both the Presque Isle Lighthouse and the Erie Land Lighthouse free of charge. Visitors must present proof of county residency, such as a driver’s license or utility bill, to take advantage of the offer…
