El Paso has always played a weird role in Texas. One thing that makes El Paso different from the rest of Texas stems from a straight up refusal by El Pasoans to obey the government.
Once upon a time, El Paso was told to join the rest of Texas in the central time zone. El Paso city, exemplifying the true Texas spirit of rebelliousness and its legendary, independent nature said no thanks – you can keep that.
Uncle Sam tried to strong arm us into it but the citizens of El Paso kept telling him to take his central time mandate and shove it. Eventually, obviously, we won.
Why El Paso Wanted Mountain Time
It’s simple. We’re closer to cities in New Mexico and Colorado, (all in the mountain time zone), than we are to other major Texas cities. Jeez, we’re closer to San Diego than we are to Beaumont, Texas. Texas is hella BIG.
For years now, decades even, some folks have been pushing to get rid of the bi – annual time change. These days, it looks like moving to permanent daylight saving time is closer than ever to actually happening.
Would El Paso Want Permanent Daylight Saving Time
It seems like making daylight saving time would be a win for Texas and El Paso but, no matter what happens, there will be plenty “for” and plenty “against”. Maybe the majority would go for this, maybe not. Wouldn’t it be hysterical though if history repeated itself and El Paso once again told the feds to F.O.?
