(TNS) — Baltimore’s Department of Public Works is monitoring water infrastructure security after the FBI and Environmental Protection Agency said cyber attacks compromised water systems in more than seven states.
The attackers, who may be based in Iran, changed devices’ IP addresses and passwords, preventing water system operators from monitoring or controlling the systems, according to the federal agencies. That can lead to flooding and pressure loss, which could allow untreated groundwater to enter pipes.
“The Baltimore City Department of Public Works continuously safeguards critical water and wastewater infrastructure through industry best practices, ongoing monitoring and collaboration with local, state and federal partners,” the public works department said in a statement Tuesday. “DPW regularly evaluates evolving threats and strengthens its cybersecurity posture.”…
