MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — There are more than 8,000 historic homes throughout the City of Mobile, but one of the most famous is closed this month for construction.

The Historic Oakleigh House Museum, built in 1833, sits off Palmetto Street. Over the past few months, its old age is catching up.
“We had a roof leak. We had a lot of water damage, which was penetrating into the walls and the plaster,” President of Historic Mobile Preservation Society, Steve May said.
“It just kept getting a little bit worse. You know, we get five feet of rain a year in Mobile, so a little leak turns into a big problem,” he continued.
When construction started at the end of July, crews found three layers of roof— including the original.
