Two local nonprofits are joining forces to throw a birthday party for Smith Mountain Lake this fall, as the beloved Virginia reservoir reaches its 60th anniversary in September. The Smith Mountain Arts Council (SMAC) and the Smith Mountain Lake Association (SMLA) are organizing the event, which takes the form of a lakeside sock hop designed to evoke the era when the lake was first filled.
According to WFXR, the celebration is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 5, running from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Smith Mountain Lake YMCA. Admission is ticketed and space is limited. No tickets will be available at the door.
What to Expect at the Event
The SML Boomer band will perform music from the 1950s and 1960s to set the period mood. Attendees can also expect diner-style food, root beer, and additional live music throughout the evening.
Organizers have leaned into the sock hop theme across all elements of the event. The era-appropriate entertainment ties directly to the decade in which the lake was created.
