ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) —A piece of Albany’s history hidden underground for nearly 100 years was uncovered on Thursday. Archaeologists are excavating the original Erie Canal Lock 1, the starting point of the canal when it opened in 1825.

For those who don’t know, Erie Canal Lock 1 helped boats move along the canal system. In just two days of digging, archaeologists were able to get to the surface and day by day they plan to dig the whole lock up.
“Now that we have located it, we will eventually go at it with a shovel and do a slower excavation to see how much of the stone still remains. But we’ve managed to find the eastern extent of the lock,” said Jenna Hendrick, an archaeologist working on the project.

Hendrick says that’s not even the most exciting part of the discovery.
“We found one of the corners of the lock house island. So that’s really exciting because now that we have a corner, we do know the extent of where we can start and end,” said Hendrick…
