PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Philadelphia’s city controller will conduct a performance audit of the school district at the request of City Council.
Funding the school district has long been a challenge. Its share of revenue from property taxes does not cover its needs. The city has been regularly increasing its contribution, but Mayor Cherelle Parker made a pitch last spring for a “recurring and reliable” funding source through a rideshare tax.
The proposal got wrapped up in council’s anger over a separate, unrelated district plan to close 17 schools. Ultimately, the rideshare tax died, but council promised to try to find a recurring revenue source…
