A colorful return
The Color the City Festival returns to the Worcester Common from 3 to 8 p.m. Aug. 7 for its sixth year. The free, family-friendly festival highlights the creativity of youth artists, leaders, and changemakers by centering youth expression. The event is organized and coordinated by the Create 508 program youth in collaboration with the Cultural Development Division and the Division of Youth Opportunities. This year, the Color the City festival celebrates the strength of the Worcester community through the theme “It Takes a Village.” To reflect this interactive theme, the Create 508 youth will transform the Worcester Common into a mini neighborhood of unique districts representing different aspects of community life. On Aug. 8, Mass Audubon’s Broad Meadow Brook wildlife sanctuary hosts its 19th annual butterfly festival, which began in 2008 in memory of longtime butterfly conservation volunteer Barbara J. Walker and now includes butterfly garden tours, up-close caterpillar observation, a sale of pollinator-friendly native plants and butterfly-themed art, plus activities especially for kids and walks through the woods designed to take you wherever a butterfly sighting is most likely.
