August 7, 1862 — Federal troops reached Clarendon. During the Clarendon Expedition of August 4–17, Union Brig. Gen. Alvin P. Hovey’s troops arrived at Clarendon in Monroe County on August 7. Federal forces shelled Confederate pickets across the White River and drove them back. From Clarendon, Union detachments pushed toward Des Arc and Cotton Plant. Three Union soldiers were killed and two wounded during the broader expedition.
